Manufacture/sale of anti-obesity drug suspended

Bay News Network, Visakhapatnam: The Drugs Controller General of India has suspended the manufacturing and sale of anti-obesity drug formulations of Sibutramine and R-Sibutramine with immediate effect as its continued use would lead to cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and stroke, according to a press note issued by Ravi Uday Bhaskar, Assistant Director, Drugs Control Administration, Visakhapatnam dist.

The above drug is available on the following brand names Leptos, Obego, Obesave, Reduce, Sibutrim, Sibutrex and Slenfig. Various regulatory authorities including those in Europe, USA, Canada and Australia have prohibited the drug based on Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes Study (SCOUT).

He advised the doctors not to prescribe the said drug and asked consumers not to use them. He directed distributors, chemists and hospitals not to purchase, supply or use the said drug. They have also been directed to return the stocks to the supply under intimation to the Drugs Control Administration.
